STIRRERS & SETTLERS

   Hello guys! Now, I want to mention about our " settler and stirring activities " in education. Especially, if you are a teacher candidate, you need to know all those settler and stirring activities that we can apply in class. What are those activities and how can we apply them, though? So as to be able to learn about those activities and their purposes, let me talk about some definitions like " settling and stirring students " first of all!

   So, what is meant by saying " settling students " ? If you want to calm your students down and settle them into a routine, you can benefit from settler activities. Let's have a look at some of them!
  • Wordplay activities : As a teacher of your pupils, I can suggest you to use matching activities with pictures and words or phrases. Also, missing letters, definitions games and crosswords are also funny. Here a crossword puzzle example is. ↙
  •  Read and draw activities : You can give children a mini reading text and ask them to draw what they read about. ↓
  • Vocabulary categorising or brainstorming activities : You can give your students 15 words randomly across the board and ask them to put all these 15 words into the correct category. After your students put them into the correct place, category, it's time to revise familiar lexical sets - cities, planets, materials, buildings etc. After all these things, you can ask your pupils to add other lexical items. ↓
  • Whole - class listening activities or games : You can try to do a simple dictation by asking your students to draw a picture. That picture can be something funny or crazy by the way. For instance ; you can dictate a monster with your young learners so as to practise colours or parts of the body. Here is a simple example. ↓

   Now, let's have a look at our " stirring activities " ! Before that, I would like to give a definition on how to stir our students. You can ;
  1. let your pupils move around as much as possible.
  2. vary pairs and groups.
  3. organise ' Home ' groups for group works.
  4. encourage movement.
  5. ask your students so as to come in front of the class and write something or an answer on the board. [ Such things liven up boring exercises and provide a little bit movement in class as well. ]
  • Use of TPR : I can suggest you to use TPR in your class.
  • Drama / acting out : For this activity, you can benefit from masks, puppets or finger puppets. You can liven up even a boring story with the help of masks and puppets. Also, you can even create funny voices with your mouth. ↓
  • Action / movement games : There are some enjoyable games that you can apply in your classroom. For example ; " any team games " and " running to the blackboard " make your pupils motivated as they compete with one another. Also, " clapping games " are funny for larger classes. ↓
  • Song, chants and raps : If you want to motivate and stir your students up, you can benefit from songs, chants and raps. Especially, when you sing songs or say chants faster and faster in class, you will really manage to stir your pupils up. By the way, I can suggest you to find those kind of songs, chants or raps on " Learn English Kids " website. Below is an example. ↓

THE END! :-)
