HOW TO TEACH GRAMMAR EFFECTIVELY?

Today, I would like to focus on how to teach grammar in an effective way. I am very sure that you thought of that before and right now I am going to give some sort of " useful tips " related to my topic.

All of you know that grammar plays a central role in every language class so it is important to teach grammar itself. How can we do that, though? Let me give some tips to you then!

= ) Tip 1 : I suggest you to avoid discussing aspects of grammar out of context.
You know students need to experience the grammar in action in a context that is meaningful to them. Also, it makes grammar less abstract and you should not forget that good examples are more effective than explanations without context.

= ) Tip 2 : Just give your students some time to discover grammar for themselves!
In this case, you need to encourage, embolden your pupils to realize things about the language. For example ; when teaching " present perfect tense ", you can give them a reading text that includes some sentences in the present perfect. Later, you can focus on one of the sentences. For instance ; " Can has travelled to Paris. Has Can travelled to Paris? Who has travelled to Paris? " and so on. Then, I suggest you to ask your students so as to find sentences from the text that has the same form ( Have / has + V3 ). Then, you can write all these sentences on the board and attract their attention to the form itself.

= ) Tip 3 : You can use games to teach and reinforce grammar points.
For example ; let's suppose that you're teaching " active / passive "! What can you do before starting to teach? You can divide the class into teams, groups of 3 - 4 work together. Later, you can give each group a sentence strap on which you have written a sentence in active voice, the students work together to alter it to passive. One group member comes in front of the class and rewrites the sentence in passive voice and you can keep scores for each group. Namely, you create a " dynamic class " by doing like that.

= ) Tip 4 : You can give students the opportunity to practice grammar in a meaningful way.
It's important to move from " control to free practice " as this increases the likelihood of students that produce correct forms and decreases the likelihood of pupils that produce incorrect forms.
Let them do these exercises in pairs or groups! If you let them study in pairs or groups, they can learn better. They can teach one another more effectively.

= ) Tip 5 : Please, try to avoid rule - giving teaching!
Knowing lots of grammar rules isn't the point. Your pupils should be able to use them in real life situations as well.
